Chin Implant: Options, Procedure & Experiences
A defined, harmoniously shaped chin makes a decisive contribution to the aesthetic balance of the face. A chin that is too small or receding, on the other hand, can alter the facial proportions and make the profile appear unbalanced. A chin implant allows this disharmony to be corrected in a targeted way – for a more defined profile and a harmonious facial structure. At Sinis Aesthetics Berlin, chin corrections are performed by experienced specialists in plastic and aesthetic surgery. Thanks to modern techniques and high-quality implants, we achieve natural-looking results that blend harmoniously into your individual facial features.
Why patients choose a chin implant – reasons
Many people opt for a chin implant when they are dissatisfied with the shape or prominence of their chin. Often there is a so-called receding chin – a chin that recedes or is too small and makes the face appear unbalanced. A chin correction can improve facial symmetry and harmonise the profile. Another reason is the restoration of the chin contour after injuries, operations or genetic peculiarities. Aesthetic aspects also play a role: a well-proportioned chin emphasises the facial line, appears strong in character and supports a balanced jaw area. Especially in combination with other procedures, such as a nose correction or a facelift, the procedure can significantly improve the overall appearance. At Sinis Aesthetics, we advise you individually in order to find the best possible solution for your facial proportions.
How does a chin implant operation work?
A chin implant procedure is one of the precise but comparatively gentle operations in the field of aesthetic facial surgery. It follows a clear sequence that is tailored to your individual facial structure and your personal wishes. The goal is a natural-looking result that blends harmoniously into your facial proportions.
Every operation begins with a detailed consultation with Prof. Dr. N. Sinis or an experienced member of his medical team. During this appointment, your facial proportions are measured precisely, the profile is analysed and your desired result is discussed. A computer-assisted simulation lets you see in advance how the chin implant will affect your profile. This individual analysis is crucial for selecting the right implant and creating a natural-looking chin line. It also assesses whether a chin correction alone or a combination with other procedures – for example a nose correction or a facelift – is advisable.
The implant is selected individually according to shape, size and material. There are various options – from subtly modelling to more strongly defining shapes. While a round implant emphasises soft contours, an angular implant is particularly suitable for patients who want a defined, masculine chin. When it comes to material selection, Sinis Aesthetics Clinic uses exclusively high-quality, biocompatible implants – usually made of medical-grade silicone or Medpor (porous polyethylene). These materials are very well tolerated, durable and enable a precise aesthetic result.
The chin implant operation is usually performed under general anaesthesia or twilight sedation, depending on preference and individual recommendation. The procedure takes about 45 to 90 minutes. The incision is made either inside the mouth or beneath the chin – both methods allow for virtually invisible scarring. In the next step, the implant is placed into a prepared pocket over the chin bone and fixed in position. The wound is then carefully closed. A dressing stabilises the chin for a few days to minimise swelling and allow the implant to heal in optimally. You can leave the clinic again after a short time. Most patients are presentable again after a few days, while complete healing is finished after about six to eight weeks.
Which materials are used for the chin implant?
High-quality materials developed specifically for aesthetic surgery are used for chin augmentation. The following have proven particularly effective:
- Silicone implants:
They are flexible, smooth and can be adapted precisely to the individual anatomy. The material is biocompatible, durable and can be removed or replaced without difficulty if necessary. - Medpor implants:
This is a porous polyethylene material that grows into the body's own tissue. This creates a particularly stable connection that virtually rules out any slipping.
Both options are very well tolerated. Which type of implant is best suited to you depends on your starting situation, your aesthetic goals and your tissue structure. At Sinis Aesthetics, only materials with clinically proven safety and the highest quality are used.
What alternatives to a chin implant are there?
Not every patient decides directly on a surgical procedure. In some cases, non-surgical methods can already achieve a more harmonious profile. A popular option is chin correction with hyaluronic acid fillers. Here the chin is modelled in a targeted way to visually compensate for small irregularities or a receding chin. This method is low in pain, requires no downtime, but only lasts a few months up to a year. Another alternative is chin modelling with the body's own fat. Here, the body's own fat tissue is harvested, processed and injected precisely. The result looks natural, and part of the transplanted fat remains permanently in the tissue. These procedures are particularly suitable for people who want a gentle correction without surgery or who initially want to test the result of an implant.
Risks and possible complications of a chin implant
Like any surgical procedure, a chin implant operation also carries certain risks. Typical side effects in the first few days are swelling, bruising, slight pain and a temporary feeling of numbness in the chin area. These symptoms usually subside on their own after a few days. Less commonly, infections, wound healing disorders or slipping of the implant can occur. In very rare cases, the body reacts with a rejection response to the material. When performed professionally by experienced specialists such as those in Prof. Dr. Sinis's team, such complications are extremely rare. Careful aftercare and compliance with the medical recommendations contribute decisively to minimising risks.
Aftercare following chin implant surgery
After the procedure, some patience and rest are required. In the first few days, the chin should be kept as still as possible to avoid swelling and pressure. Speaking, chewing and laughing may be temporarily slightly restricted.
Recommended guidelines:
- Keep your head elevated and apply cold compresses for the first 48 hours
- Prefer soft food that is not too hot
- Avoid sport, sauna and physical exertion for about two to three weeks
- Attend regular check-up appointments at the clinic
After about two weeks the result is already clearly visible, and after six to eight weeks it is completely stable. The fine scars (if placed externally) usually fade inconspicuously.
A high-quality chin implant is generally permanent. Since the materials used are not broken down, the result usually lasts a lifetime. Only in rare cases does a replacement become necessary – for example in the event of a renewed profile adjustment or at the patient's request.
Chin Implant: Experiences & Results
Many patients report a new, more confident sense of life after their chin correction. The change appears subtle yet striking – the face looks more harmonious and expressive.
After a detailed consultation, many of our patients opt for a combination of chin correction and nose surgery in order to harmonise the facial profile optimally. The results are long-lasting, natural and individual.
